The Abolitionism and the debate on the dignity of sex workers

Keywords: feminism, autonomy, sex work, dignity, puritanism

Abstract

Abolitionism is a feminist movement that strives to put an end to prostitution, since it considers it a violent and undignified act in the lives of women, whom it considers to be necessarily victims. This essay seeks to investigate, in a critical way, how the historical evolution of abolitionism led it to the conclusion that sex work is "undignified", thus denying sex workers access to basic rights. Thus, I will make a historical and conceptual reconstruction of abolitionism and then confront it with the general idea of dignity, with the aim of showing the denial of access to basic rights for sex workers.
