The normalization of genocide in the journalistic language:

the Palestinian case

Keywords: Speech acts, language and power, orientalism, journalistic language, agenda-setting

Abstract

This text explores the degradation of journalistic discourse aimed at distorting serious events, such as the systematic and ongoing violations of Palestinian human rights, particularly since October 7, 2023. This is examined through the lens of agenda-setting theories, speech acts, and the relationship between language and power, as articulated by McCombs y Shaw, Austin y Searle, and Fairclough. The author warns of the catastrophic consequences of normalizing violence, using the Palestinian case for pedagogical purposes.
